About Janet Cobb

Contact and Location

I have a varied and eclectic background in music that has lead to a passion for helping others to move toward their musical goals without being side-tracked. I teach classical music, but also embrace ear-training, playing by ear, reading lead sheets, and learning basic blues, rock and jazz styles.

I started taking piano lessons at age nine. After three years of lessons, my teacher decided I was too advanced for her, so I quit taking lessons, taught myself to read chord symbols and played pop music. As a junior in high school, I decided I wanted to be a music major and started taking lessons again, recieving high ratings in Guild and UIL contests for the next two years.

In college, I studied with Georgette Gettle at Texas Tech University. After two years, feeling the need to make a living and get out of Lubbock, I got a degree in English because it was faster than finishing in music. I moved to Austin, got a master's degree and started teaching at Austin Community College.

I have nearly 30 years experience teaching on the college level. I also taught piano lessons to children from 1976 - 1982 and have been teaching again for the last three years.

In the last five years, I have returned to school in music, completing an Associate of Arts degree at Austin Community College, studying conducting and choral methods at Texas State University, and continue taking voice lessons at ACC with Dr. Bruce Douglas.

I have also studied piano and voice with Ruth Huber, founder of Austin's Tapestry Singers, and taken voice lessons from Mady Kaye. I currently study piano with Larry Harms of Houston Piano Company.

I am a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers and perform at various churches in Austin, Temple and San Marcos.
